OUTER Lower leg: Peroneal (fibular) nerve is in the outer part of the calf (lower leg).  It tends to get injured just below the outer part of the knee where it crosses over the fibular head. The nerve controls muscles/sensation of the outer calf.

perhaps 4 weeks: If involved only myelin coverings, about 4 weeks for recovery.  If injury to central axon, regrowth at 0.1mm daily.  Emg test may help predict recovery.

F wave: Usually for foot/hand muscles, it is a small part of a fullelectodiagnostic test that studies electrical response to a nerve right after the main motor response wave (from being very stimulated), representing a rebound electrical response in the nerve, backwards up to the spinal cord.  When compared to the motor wave by ratios, certainly aspects of nerve slowing can be found. Full exam is needed.

: All details matter when it comes to injuries to nerves. Partial recovery is expected in majority of cases, overall function, range of motion may be influenced. Physical therapy always needed to ensure maximal recovery.

Neurapraxia: This term implies incomplete injury. Thus, especially in considering his age, i would be optimistic about recovery of function.  Recovery, however, can be prolonged and not really begin until 6+ weeks after injury. The key is to avoid stiffness or contracture in the meantime which may require bracing.

: I cannot imagine the nerve being involved   I believe some proper stretching and strengthening , physical therapy will help.

Overuse/Compensation: Peroneal tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendon and tendon sheath complex of the peroneus longus and brevis tendons. These tendons arise from muscles in the outside of the lower leg and course behind the fibula (ankle bone on outside of ankle). Walking on the outside of the foot (often to avoid pain on the inside of the foot or heel) can lead to this condition as can a bad ankle sprain.

No, ice will not.: No, ice will not, probably help.  Foot drop is caused by a serious injury to the common peroneal nerve, and/or entrapment of the nerve causing paralysis of  the peroneal muscles. Seek medical help asap, you do not want this to become a permanent paralysis !

MRI: You need an MRI to assess soft tissue tear in ligaments and tendons.  See your foot doctor.
