Not recommended: Pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) has a component salycelate that was linled with a devistating disease called reye's syndrome in the 70's & 80's. After physicians stopped recomending salycelate products there was a rapid decline in the frequency of that problem. Discuss your concern with your physician for the best possible comfort meds.

Ingestion of &lt;150 mg: per kilogram of body weight usually produces no toxicity or mild toxicity. If you are absolutely certain that she ate no more than 2 adult chewable tablets of Pepto-Bismol, she will probably be okay. If not certain, take her to a hospital-based pediatric ER where a plasma salicylate concentration can be determined. Keep all prescription, OTC, herbal &amp; other drugs out of the reach of children.

my 45lb 3 year old just ate 3 chewable pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) tablets. should i be worried? its been about half an hour an he isnt showing any kind of reaction.

RX UNLIKELY: Peptobismal  generally well tolerated. 3 tabs still a low dose. It may cause ringing in the ears and dark BM. SEEK evaluation of any other issues develop

i have had vomiting and diahreah since sunday evening.  ate some soup yesterday have also tried pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate). but still have diahreah.  any other ideas on what i could take?

Usually need time...: Most cases of viral gastroenteritis are mild, self-limited, and not life threatening.  These resolve on their own with supportive care (drink fluids to prevent dehydration, eat moderately as tolerated, as needed analgesia). In special cases (newborns, elderly, debilitated) hospitalization may be required to provide IV fluids and to support co-morbid medical conditions.

Sure, no harm there.: If it's food related there may be associated diarrhea, and will be limited to 12-18 hrs. Try to stay hydrated. Either way it should be self limited.  Of course, if symptoms worsen or persist more than 2-3 days, i suggest you contact your provider. Good luck.

Go ahead!: Why do you think you have food poisoning? What symptoms do you have? Taking pepto or Tums (calcium carbonate) will not do any harm but if you have no symptoms, why do you want to take these medications. It is not a good idea to take any medication, unless it is needed.

No: Both pepto bishop and alka seltzer contain aspirin which could be toxic. Use the Omeprazole with 1 or the other. Take the correct dose. All the best!

Safe: There is nothing in this that will degrade in a dangerous manner.  You may safely drink pepto bismol that is several years expired.

similar drugs: The active ingredient in pepto, bismuth subsalicylate, is chemically very similar to Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). Taking the two together could increase your risk for side effects like bleeding in your stomach. This is especially true if you have clotting problems like von willibrand factor deficiency.
