my infant is showing signs of dehydration. when do i call the doctor? my baby has been ill and is having fewer wet diapers than normal. ive tried to give her pedialyte, but she isnt taking much of it. at what point do i need to call her pediatrician?

You : You should call your child's doctor if you see any signs of dehydration.  These signs are:

- dry mouth
-few or no tears when crying
-excessive fussiness
-fewer than 3-4 wet diapers/day
-no urination in 6-8 hours
-sunken soft spot
-dry, wrinkled or doughy skin
-appears weak or limp
-decreased alertness or increased sleepiness
-rapid breathing or fast heart rate

Not really.: If the child has healthy kidneys, it will get rid of extra water and electrolytes that it doesn't need.

No: It is a rather expensive and funky tasting hydration solution, but it will not harm baby.

No: Pedialyte contains a sugar. This breaks the concept of a fast. Non-nutrient liquids only during the period of fast.

No.: Totally useless for that purpose. Good burping works best.

Why: It is no better or worse than any other source of fluids in his diet.It does not offer nutrients beyond the sugar and electrolytes in the product. If he like s the taste it won't hurt him but don't expect it to make him healthier.

No, it's not OK.: I see your logic, but is not OK. Pedialyte is a treatment for acute GI diseases and suppose to replace missing electrolytes with diarrhea and vomiting. If your child is eating normally, his/her serum electrolyte should be normal as he/she gets everything necessary from a food consumed and doesn't need anything extra. Just be sure that your child eats balanced food according to his/her age. Best!

can you use pedialyte after 48 hrs? i have heard its a sells thing or bacteria gets in or it lose its affects what is the truth? when does it go bad?

Contamination: According to the manufacturer, risk of bacterial growth in opened containers increases after opened for 48 hours, even in the refrigerator.  Using powder packets and reconstituting it only when you need it may help prevent waste.

i ran out of apple pedialyte & the only one i have now is strawberry. i was advised to give my baby clear fluids, but i don't have a way to go buy now?

Pedialyte fine: The pedialyte you have should be fine or you can give water instead
