Depends on the plan: People don't normally have peak flow meters. That means a patient got a meter because her doctor taught her how to use it and how to read the numbers, as a way of measuring how good or bad her lungs are doing. The doctor would have given her a written plan of what to do at particular numbers, as the numbers are going up or down. Otherwise, she brings the meter and all meds to an ER or Urgent Care.

Breif: A peak expiratory flow rate is a fairly simple test done, usually as part of a comprehensive pulmonary function test procedure.  By itself, a few minutes as one usually is instructed to do several attempts and the best result or average results recorded.  A full set of pft's may take 30 minutes to an hour depending on factors like patient cooperation, quality of equipment etc.

Depends: Peakflow is based on your height and age.  Best to google a peak flow rate calculator (they are free on line).

Accepted Answer

Low peak flow: It depends on your baseline peak flow values, but this is low for your age.  If this is a significant drop (more than 20% of normal), then either refer to your asthma action plan or call your physician for instructions.  If this is not possible, then proceed to urgent care center or ER for respiratory evaluation and treatment.  If this is a normal value (ie chronic obstruction), then disregard.

Asthma: You most likely have a bronchial asthma equivalent if you don't experience wheezing. Bronchodilating inhalers,and at times, corticosteroid inhalers should prevent or relieve your symptoms. If you're not doing well a pulmonologist would be best to evaluate and treat you. A normal peak flow weight for you can be from 380-460.

More information/pft: Yes, for most adults, this would indicate an abnormal amount of air being expired. This may indicate obstruction/restriction or a combination of these conditions. Your physician will guide further testing to determine the underlying cause.
Asthma is one of the more common causes of a low PEF.

: Peak flow is a measure of the of the air flow out of the lungs. This can vary throughtout the day/night in people without asthma. The peak flow only varies about 20% in a person without asthma (or 80% of best peak flow). If it varies more than that then it is an indication of asthma and it can also be used to assess how well someone with asthma is controlled with medication.
