had acl reconstruction on 1/8/2016 using a patellar tendon graft. my question is- is it normal to lift your leg with tendon when muscles don't work?

Accepted Answer

No: The answer is "No" because tendons don't contract... meaning they don't move on their own. The muscles contract. To move against gravity, such as lifting a leg, at least one muscle has to move. Otherwise, nothing happens. To move with gravity, such as letting a leg drop down, whatever muscles that were holding the leg up just have to relax or stop contracting... and the leg will drop.

Leg: Your leg is lifted by your quadricep extending the suprapatellar tendon and lifting the leg through the patella. Given they used a quad tendon graft there might be some issues with the tendons connection. You should have your surgeon evaluate this.

Both are serious : I do believe the result from repair them the patellar tendon give better result.

Accepted Answer

Common problem: Anterior (front) knee pain is very common after an acl reconstruction, especially after a patellar tendon autograft.  Kneeling may always be a problem.  Keep doing your rehab.  I would expect some improvement with time.

Possible: If there's been any injury to a recently reconstructed acl, i recommend you see your surgeon for an evaluation.

See below: Although it varies, most patients progress to weight bearing as tolerated in a brace over an approximate 2 week period and rehab with the goal of returning to full activity over approximately 12 weeks.  Each case is different, I would discuss your specific case with your surgeon.

i tore my acl (complete tear, patella tendon), mcl (minor tear, bioscrews and stitches), and meniscus (had to trim 1/3).  how long before i can run?

Varies: It varies somewhat based upon surgical preference, you certainly would want to clear it with your surgeon.  all that being said, 12 weeks would be a general time frame in which one could often return to light jogging with those injuries/surgery.

i had acl reconstruction both knees- 2005 left and 2009 right. both are torn again 100%. doctor suggests new surgeries by taking tendons from patella.

ACL tears: Its unfortunate that both are once again torn. You need the ACL for joint stability otherwise you will have to wear a knee stabilizer. I think repeat surgery is a reasonable option. You will have to be extremely careful once this is done.

i ruptured and damaged my mcl beyond repair, dislodged all cartilage in my knee, ruptured my acl, damaged my pcl and unattached and damaged my patella tendon. i got badly tripped and would like to know what i would feel if i had re-damaged the patella ten

Accepted Answer

Depends: Injury and pain is felt differently by different people. If you have not had the previous injuries repaired,it may be difficult to feel any significant difference. The function of your knee(being able to straighten it and hold it off the ground while sitting) may be affected with a patellar tendon injury -but may not be. An MRI is sometimes the only way to see the injury. See your doctor.

had acl reconstruction and meniscus removal on left knee over 25 years ago.  right knee is aching in patella tendon area constantly.  ?

Accepted Answer

Osteoarthritis: While there are several possible causes, meniscectomy at an early age is the most likely cause of a subsequent osteoarthritis. See an orthopedist. The knee should be x rayed and an MRI may also be needed.
