my 77 year old husband has had a catheter in place for 2weeks awaiting partial prostatectomy. today we are seeing blood in the bag. is this normal?

Probably OK but call: It's common to see some blood in the bag from having a urinary catheter. As long as it's a small amount and not pure blood filling the bag, it's not an emergency. It's still worth a call to the doctor to let him or her know. It's possible your husband has a urinary tract infection.

Open & Robotic: Prostatectomy is surgical removal of the prostate, usually for prostate cancer. There are currently two options: open prostatectomy and robotic prostatectomy. There are no head-to-head trials between the two approaches. What is clear is that the experience of the surgeon is more important than the approach when it comes to complications and complete excision of the cancer.

Yes: Unfortunately all surgical procedures have pain associated with them.  Both open and robotic approaches have some degree of pain though robotic has typically less.  Fortunately, the pain is typically tolerable with either approach.

Very Common: Most frequent operation performed by urologists. Many urologists perform 2 - 10 opearations/week. Simple transurethral or sub-capsular open prostatectom for benign prostatic obstruction. Radical robotic, laparoscopic or open radical prostatectomy for cancer. Some of us feel that possibly too many men undergo radical prostatectomy. Always consider 2nd opinion before undergoing radical prostatectomy.

Depends on cause.: Some of the common cause for prostatectomy are benign prostatic enlargement causing urinary retention,  nodules in prostrate on radio imaging, or suspected malignancy( cancer ) on biopsy.
