Possibilities..: Include mumps, a bacterial infection, a saliva stone blocking the duct of the gland, or even a tumor. But how are you sure it's your parotid?

Parotid Cyst: Most of the time a parotid cyst is benign.  It is currently estimated that 80% of masses, tumors or cysts that occur in the parotid are benign, while 20% are cancerous.  While the odds are certainly in your favor, best to have it evaluated to make sure it isn't something that is going to need surgery or other treatments.

how can you tell the difference between facial swelling caused by tmj and swelling caused by problems with salivary (parotid) glands?

Anatomy: The TMJ capsule is right in front of the ear and the parotid gland is nearby but in a different location. A trip to the dentist would be a good start to help make the distinction and determine what is actually swollen.

i am taking sucralfate 1gm 4-times daily for possible ulcer .. after 5 days of taking i have developed swollen parotid glands .. you can visually see the swelling ... swollen for 3 days now ... could the medicine be the problem ? ... i am 72 .?

: It looks as if you may be right, that Sucralfate could cause facial swelling and could cause dry mouth. Sucking on lemon and frequent rinsing of mouth may help or you may want to have your doctor reevaluate your medication for a change.

Parotid spasm: The parotid gland is on of the large glands that makes saliva. The duct or tube that drains it secretes saliva into the mouth from the cheek oposite the second molar. I that tube is blocked or partially blocked, the gland spasms as it tries to secrete the saliva. The tube can be swollen from an inflammatory process or there could be a stone, it could be from dehydration, or it could be from tumor.

Benign?: The most effective way to " reduce" the size of parotid glands that are not swollen and infected is surgical excision or parotidectomy. 
Older males with both parotid glands enlarged need a work up.

Bad things: You could leak saliva out of your face continuously.  You could get a flesh-eating bacterial infection that would require removal of a big portion of the surrounding tissue.  You could paralyze part of your face.  Why would you want to do that?
