Too many acronyms : Whenever a test is done somebody has to say what is positive or negative in a result about it. These are all summed up in the sensitivity and specificity of the particular test. 60 year old. my husband & i of 40 years have never had any other sexual partners. my last pap smear showed positive hpv mrna e6/e7. negative genotypes 16, 18/45 &negative cytology. all negative in 2021 as well. how is this possible? next steps?

: HPV is contracted through sexual contact with an infected person. The virus is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, and condoms may not provide complete protection against it. HPV can also be spread through oral sex, anal sex, and other forms of sexual activity. This is a perplexing answer isn't it.

age 29, had a pap smear with results as asc-us and positive for hpv - other high risk, and negative for hpv 16 &18. last pap smear was at age 21. what does this mean? what happens next? is it very likely that i have cancer?

: It means that you should get repeat PAPs as advised by your doctor. It is too soon to worry about cancer.

my recent pap smear shows ascus + hpv high risk positive. my last test was done in may 2021 which showed normal and negative hpv. i have scheduled a colposcopy next month but how possible i would have a result >= cin3? i am very nervous and worried?

: Nobody can predict that which is the exact reason why colposcopy needs to be done. You should not worry too much because the condition is treatable so just patiently wait for the procedure next month. Good luck.

i've had positive hrhpv and ascus/lsil in my pap smear before. in recent years, hpv has been negative, but i repeatedly getting reports saying either inadequate sample or absent ec/tz components. i am not pregnant, why can't i get a proper sample?

: With a prior positive "high risk" HPV result, with ASCUS, a colposcopy with directed biopsies may be necessary.  Consult with your GYN physician or secure a referral to another GYN physician for a "second opinion".

Sometimes: If the hpv virus does not change the cellular content of the pap smear then it will be reported as negative even though it was present. Many pap labs now also report the presence and typing of the hpv on pap smears.

Depends: Most likely there is not much concern if the hpv dna test is negative. Slightly abnormal paps could be secondary to atrophy or mild inflammation.

It's a precaution: Endometrial cells come from your uterus. In women your age, about 12% show normal endometrial cells on their pap smear.  Usually they are just normal cells that have "shed" into your pap smear. But about 1 in  10 times they can signal something abnormal is happening in your uterus, possibly cancer. It's recommended that any woman with these cells on a pap smear has further testing, just to be sure.

i have "abnormal cells" in my pap smear with negative hpv.  i have no symptoms.  is this common in menopause?  my doc says it is.  repeating pap 4 mos

The Pap intends: To looks at cervical cells, but can also collect endometrial lining cells.  I'd not contradict your doctor, and the pace of re-exam is fine.  Next step is a visit to gyn oncologist for "colposcopy" and biopsy, or a D&C to look at the endometrium.  You do not mention bleeding: reg/irreg, heavy light, painful intercourse.  Pose these to your doc.
