No, but I do them: No i haven't had a panniculectomy but it is something that i commonly do for people that have a very large area of excess skin and fat around their middle. Most commonly this is from massive weight loss, but can occur for a variety of reasons. It differs from a full "tummy tuck" in that there is no tightening work on the muscles. Please see an experienced plastic surgeon to discuss your options.

Skin apron surgery: After significant weight loss, sometimes the overhanging skin (pannus) interferes with activity and further weight loss.  In those circumstances, it can be removed with a simple removal of the overhang (panniculectomy).  This is followed up later with the cosmetic procedure abdominoplasty.

Same as any surgery: The risks of panniculectomy are the same as any other procedure but in the aftermath of massive weight loss or when performed for morbid obesity. There may be the added concern of poor wound healing with dehisence (separation) and infection, blood loss and blood clots which could become fatal.

Accepted Answer

Yes but with risks: This sis not an uncommon combination but there may be increased risks with prolonged surgery that primarily relate to blood loss, infection and the potential for a deep venous thrombosis (clot) and pulmonary embolus. Discuss with your gynecologist and plastic surgeon to review these risks as well as to determine if you are a good candidate.

Depends: Panniculectomy may be best and most appropriate if you have a lot of weight left to lose but you also have hanging abdominal skin which impedes your activities. Abdominoplasty is ideal if you are not overweight and you have extra skin and also need your abdominal wall tightened.

The difference...: Is that in a panniculectomy, the excess "apron" of fat and skin is removed from the abdomen through a long incision at the lower abdomen. In an abdominoplasty, the same thing is done but also (and very importantly) the rectus muscles are brought back to their normal position in the midlne and the abdominal muscular wall is tightened.

Muscle tightening: A panniculectomy removes the "apron" of excess skin and fat in the lower abdomen, which is usually (but not always) caused by large weight loss.

An abdominoplasty includes this as well as tightening of the muscles of the anterior abdominal wall.

Simillar: Panniculectomy is a "medically necessary" procedure in which a large amount of an overweight person's obese abdomen is removed because it causes issues like reduced mobility, rashes, difficulty fixing hernias, etc. Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic procedure to firm and improve the abdomen's look. Abd. Wall is often tightened with sutures, pts are not usually overweight- just loose skin/abd. Wall.

No: This is a surgical procedure and therefore only a surgeon should attempt this procedure.   Many general surgeons have experience in this procedure but as a whole, plastic surgeons are the most qualified to perform panniculectomies.

can you get a plain panniculectomy during a c-section?

Accepted Answer

Yes: A true panniculectomy is reasonable during a c-section.  However, a tummy tuck should be performed after the patient recovers from the pregnancy and is finished having children.
