what does pancreatitis really mean? can someone have no pain and still have pancreatitis? does just high lipase (570) and high amylase mean pancreatitis or can it be caused by the stomach flu?

: Pancreatitis means acute or chronic inflammation of the Pancreas.
Acute pancreatitis is associated with severe abdominal pain and other GI upset symptoms such as loss of appetite and nausea/vomiting. Chronic pancreatitis develops after repeated bouts of acute pancreatitis.....often caused by excessive use of alcohol.

Pancreatitis: A viral infection by itself can cause pancreatitis. The severity is variable. Trauma to the upper abdomen can also cause pancreatitis.

just went to the hospital because i thought i had the stomach flu. doc agreed but blood work came back and had very high lipase (242 u/l), doc said its not pancreatis because i dont have the symptoms like pain, liver also high. what can it be??

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, your lipase level while slightly elevated is not at a level to be diagnostic of pancreatitis. You lab tests and symptoms could be due to a viral infection.    Wish you good health!

Flu care: If you have the flu hydrate well w water, herbal teas, soup or juice. Drink sufficiently to have pale to light yellow urine. You can use pain relievers like tylenol (acetaminophen) or nsaid’s. Rest a lot! in some situations antiviral medications (tamiflu, relenza, flumadine) may be prescribed within the first couple of days of symptoms to hasten healing or they can be used after flu exposure to prevent illness.

Tough Flu Season: This has been a tough Influenza season.  The vaccine wasn't a great match to what has been circulating.  Additionally Influenza-A was prevalent early in the season, and now Influenza-B is becoming more common!

Prescription medication within the first 48 hours of symptoms appearing had decreased the severity of symptoms otherwise symptomatic treatment is adviced. Best is for prevention by way of vaccination annually to the kids, elderly, immune deficiencies and healthcare givers and workers.
