Biopsy needed R/O Ca: Be certain biopsy done in precise manner by surgeon and make sure report is definitely conclusive and accurate as biopsy at marginal area may miss diagnosis ending misdiagnosis as you are in high risk group. Wonder your sister had a genetic study done? Good luck

clear sticky discharge from one nipple only when expressed/compressed though. it comes out of only one duct from nipple. is it breast cancer/very concerning? its only about 1-2 drops each time. everything online says dcis. breast exam found no lumps?

: I answered your question previously. You should stop manipulating your nipple for finding the discharge. If the discharge has persisted by the presence of stain on your shirt or bra until after the next cycle, you should see your doctor by then.

rephrased question: two random lumps were biopsied. both contained adh (vasopressin). shouldn't other lumps be tested. how can one be sure dcis isn't lurking?

I assume ADH: is referring to atypical ductal hyperplasia.  If this is found on needle biopsy, depending on the sample characteristics in many or most cases it is an indication for surgical excision.  It is considered a risk factor for breast cancer and may make you a candidate for additional screening.  Ask your doc if you are a candidate for adjunct screening with mri/us.  That is how to detect lurking cancer

i have dcis and a new lump on the left breast.  the surgeon just felt it, and said it's from a rib?  does that make sense?

Catilage?: Your surgeon may be referring to the cartilage adjacent to the rib  ( costochondral junction). This would be near the breast, but not in the breast. If you feel a lump in your breast, though, please get a second opinion.

: Never say never, but no tumor grows that fast. The apparent increase in size may be due inflammation, necrosis and edema.

Biopsy: An overwhelming majority of cases of dcis are diagnosed in women who have an abnormality seen on mammography in the absence of any palpable lumps.  It is believed that the significant increase in dcis over the past 20 years is due to the increased mammography screening over this time period.

Surgery +/- RT: First-line therapy for dcis is surgery, which may involve a lumpectomy or a mastectomy, depending upon the growth pattern of the dcis.  Following lumpectomy, radiation therapy (rt) is often recommended to lower the risk of cancer recurrence.  Furthermore, tamoxifen may be recommended to prevent a second breast cancer from developing.

Quite slowly: It is difficult to define. But it does not spread all that fast. You have a few months before you need to worry about that.

why does dcis become invasive?

Accepted Answer

Unknown: If we knew the answer to this question, women with dcis would not all need surgery! about 50% of dcis (ductal carcinoma in situ), if left untreated, will go on to become invasive cancer.  Certain genes in the dcis cells get "turned on", making them invasive, but we don't know what makes this switch happen.
