Yes: Probably jammed the joint. Rest the thumb. Ice if helps. But if you rest the thumb should recovery but may take a few weeks

Probable contusion: Most likely you have a contusion in the hand which is a soft
tissue injury which will heal with ice, rest and time
if symptoms persist and xray should be performed to rule out
a metacarpal or carpal bone fracture.

Ligament: Sprain usually means ligaments while straining is usually muscle or tendon.

It if hurts to press, don't do it.
And get a thumb spica splint.

Cause of injury,Xray: Prior to providing a useful answer the nature of the injury needs to be specified. Also the type and results of the Physician's exam is necessary along with result of X-ray exams if indicated by exam.

In general, being able to move all joints of the finger, while stabilizing other joints of the digit and lack of fractures on X-Ray usually indicates a good prognosis.

See Hand Doctor: Should not ignore. See a Board Certified Dermatologist or  a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who treats hand problems. Let them evaluate and treat you. (Or go to an Emergency room).

Early ganglion: There are many reasons for this, therefore appropriate diagnostic exam and perhaps mri.
It may be a ganglion cyst, capsular or ligament injury etc.

: At this time I would diagnose a sprain and feel that the bruise is a contusion rather than a sign of fracture or torn ligament. Absence of swelling is a good sign.  A wrist sprain can take 10-14 days to heal. If no gradual improvement in pain, get examined &amp; advised by your physician or an orthopedic surgeon.

Call Hand Specialist: It sounds like you should see a physician immediately. It sounds like you had a significant hyperextension injury to your thumb and you may have torn some of the ligaments that support your thumb because of the amount of swelling and redness. A doctor needs to check the blood flow to your thumb and assess any possible nerve damage,and any possible fracture/dislocation. ER if high energy injury.

Get examined: Cannot say in this forum whether you have a 'sprained' hand/ finger etc. Or something more( like a fracture) w/o examining you and then if needed, obtaining x-rays .So if you're hand/ wrist or fingers continue to hurt see your pcp for exam/ x-rays and possible referral to orthopedic surgeon. I : I don't think anyone can tell by the fact that you have less or more  pain. A bad sprain can hurt as much as a fracture. A bruised or "jammed" joint can hurt a lot if there is a lot of swelling. An x-ray will help and an exam in person. Your should include more detail if you ask again. Can i tell you if your hand is sprained, sure i'm capable of that with exam details of making   better guestimate.
