Soft tissue: Chronic or acute mechanical stress of collateral ligaments on outside of knees.  Look in the mirror as you put your heels together and observe whether you are slightly bow legged.  To take stress off knees by putting raisers in the lateral half of each shoe; to supinate the feet and thereby realign both legs and knees.

i have pain on both sides of both knees when i apply pressure to the area with my hands. doesn't hurt otherwise. i just returned from breckenridge, co. maybe high altitude-related? i live in colorado springs, co though?

: Wondering what was different about your activity. It is quite possible that this represents irritation of ligaments or tendons in the area. If you were hiking , for instance, you could have caused a mild overuse of these structures. Unlikely this was due to altitude. It sould resolve quickly over the next few days with resumption of normal activity. If persistent, see your doctor.

marathon training. 10 miles saturday - no pain. on monday, pain on both sides of my left knee on stairs and treadmill.  didn't run yesterday.  causes?

Likely strain/sprain: Most likely the muscles or connections around the knee are irritated. Muscles get strained, and several connect around both sides of the knee. I would suspect tendinitis or ligament sprain from running or other aspects of training. Even if no pain at the time, such things as hills, shoes, how well stretched before running and warm-down can lead to injuries that show up a day or two later.

have been chasing abd pain, on both sides about at belly button lvl for 4 yrs. no gi problem.  + musculoskeletal pain -neck/back/knees.  any ideas?

Need an evaluation: You have a knee Ed fusion, and swelling in the back is a Baker cyst, and that is compressing on certain structures. There are other things I can mimic this. You need to have imaging, and evaluation, fluid removed from the knee, and a good idea of what the internal structural problems that may be compressing the nerve or vascular structures in the back of the knee

See rheumatology: the joints of the knees and ankles may be swelling because of an underlying systemic disease.  If there is a family history of arthritis, or even if there isn't talk with your primary care physician and/or consider a consultation with a rheumatologist.

Probably contusion: A direct blow to the knee most commonly causes a contusion, a bruise to the soft tissues and the bone.
It can also cause bursitis, an inflammation of the tissue in front of the knee.
If there is significant swelling or instability, it may be worth seeing a doctor to have it examined to be sure there is no internal injury.
