Accepted Answer

Yes, possibly: Your symptoms could be carotidynia, but could also be a variant of 1) temporomandibular syndrome, or 2) temporal arteritis, or 3) neuropathy of the trigeminal nerve, maxillary branch.   Or, it could simply be complex pain radiation from your migraine syndrome. If it persists, you should see a neurologist or a neurologically oriented pain medicine MD

See a doctor:  You have symptoms that are usually found in people suffering from a number of different conditions, such as cervical arthritis, carotid dissection, a thin neck , dermatitis and swollen lymph nodes.

Could be: carotid or another major vessel or aneurysm.  Only way to know for sure is by careful physical exam and sometimes imaging such as ultrasound, CT, or MR.  Show it to your doctor to be sure.

could i have carotid artery dissection? pain in neck started 5 days ago , comes and goes . also experiencing stabbing pain on in head that comes and goes ( all on left side ) how long would a stroke from a dissection take to form ?

: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. It would be prudent to see a doctor. Carotid artery dissection is not common unless you have Marfan's.

Vascular prob or BP: Your ears ARE perfect - they are hearing the quiet sounds of your heartbeat in the internal carotid artery (next to ear). When you turn your head or press on your neck, you are restricting that flow, hence the changes in the intensity of the sound. The most common cause for this is high blood pressure (BP) or hypertension. Other vascular causes are rare. Get your BP checked &amp; keep a log book of Sx

More of a vein prob: The artery takes blood from the heart to the brain, the veins drain the blood from the brain back to the heart. If there is something blocking the return flow (the vein) then the increased pressure in the vein makes some fluid leak into the surrounding tissues. Also, the lymph channels drain down and those can get blocked and cause swelling. Many things can cause this, be sure to get all the tests.

Aneurysm doubtful: An aneurysm is very unlikely. You may have an inflammatory condition or vasculitis. Generally, arteries don't hurt unless inflamed. An ultrasound would be the first step. Make an appointment with a vascular surgeon, but, you will not likely need surgery.

Carotid dissection.: This may very well be a normal occurrence, but I'm assuming you've been back to your Vascular surgeon for regular evaluations and Doppler studies.  If you have not, then I can't be sure.

i have been occasionally waking up with dim vision in left eye. i have a 60% blockage of my carotid artery on the left. could this be the cause?

Accepted Answer

Maybe: Amaurosis fugax is what you are referring to.  The plaque in the carotid artery can shed particulate matter upstream, and when this enters the artery going to the same side eye, typical symptom of "shade coming over the eye" is experienced.  Visiting an eye doctor may help make this diagnosis.
