Very common: I see this a great deal, specially in patients prone to headaches and migraine.  Just above the top of the angle between your head and neck is the occipital plexus, which is were migraines really originate from.  Tenderness in the region is rarely serious and common, may also be indicative of arthritis high in your neck.

Muscle spasm: 20&#x27;s male with knot-like sensation in upper neck likely has chronic muscle spasm.  If symptoms are unilateral then chronic head tilting is to be considered.  Other associated findings might be asymmetric shoulders with underlying scoliosis and even pelvic girdle asymmetry due to a unilateral SIJ hypermobility disorder.  Osteopathy, massage, cannabis topicals, and acupuncture are considerations.

Sometimes: The optic nerve carries the visual impulse from the eye to the brain.  It will function if it is not mechancially disrupted and the signal generating compenents of the eye are intact.  All the components must be  in good shape - not just the nerve.

Could be serious...: There is a nerve damage condition called Horner syndrome, characterized by miosis (a constricted pupil), ptosis (a weak, droopy eyelid), and anhidrosis (decreased sweating) on one side of the face. Some causes of Horner syndrome are considered medical emergencies. Thus, an evaluation at the Emergency Room is needed, if these symptoms recently or suddenly appeared.

The : The facial nerve (also called "cranial nerve seven" or "cranial nerve vii") is the nerve that moves the muscles in the face.  There is one for each side of the face.  If facial paralysis is caused by damage to the facial nerve on one side of the face, there are several options available.  These options include using another working nerve on the damaged side, or connecting part of the facial nerve on the good side to the damaged side of the face.

The number of options and techniques used is steadily growing, largely due to the knowledge gained in an effort to repair injuries sustained in modern warfare.

A discussion with a plastic surgeon is a first step.
