Stop the walk talk.: Walked for a long time, I assume means, recently walked. You have over stress the toe, The tissues around the toe have been injured and now need time to recover. The pain is probably temporary and will go away with rest and time. I doubt that it is injured to the point of fracturing, but an x-ray might be appropriate, if there is swelling associated with the pain.

Ice it: I would like to know how you know it's a nerve? Nerves are not so easily visible at that anatomical location. Incidently, if it is gout you are experiencing the ice will make it hurt more.

Numerous causes: unril you get seen by a podiatrist, I would try 600mg of Ibuprofen 3 times a day. X-rays and possibly blood tests could be needed to diagnose your problem

for months, i have had acute intermittent pain in the joint of my right big toe (where it connects to the foot). i don't have any standard risk factors for gout. i am active and i am not overweight. what should i do?

Osteoarthritis ?: It could be gout, but even without treatment it is unlikely for an acute gout attack to last this long, or to be so intermittent.  This is more likely osteoarthritis.  An exam and maybe a radiograph should be able to settle the diagnosis quickly and easily.

Arthritis: Arthritis is a common reason for joint pain.  Seeing a podiatrist and getting x-rays will tell you if it is present.

Arthritis: Actually it could be a number of different things but if it has all of a sudden become red, hot, swollen, and painful it may be gout.  If it has been developing over many years then it is likely something called "hallux limitus" or "hallux rigidus" which is basically an arthritic process of the big toe joint that over time causes limitation of motion. I would recommend seeing a podiatrist.
