NO: Metformin lowers blood sugar with its major side effect being gastrointestinal.
Your symptoms are coincidental and sound like they may be due to a spine problem  eg: Disc prolapse

Low back pain: Low back pain typically radiates into the low back lumbar region and down the legs, it does not usually radiate up above the back.

Many Possibilities: Depending on how long it's been going on, i would consider an evaluation by a spine specialist.  Sometimes it could be a muscle imbalance, early onset arthritis or scoliosis.  Also could be a pinched nerve/herniated disc.  Either way it might be good to figure it out and get appropriate treatment.

Low back pain: The kidneys are a lot higher in the back than most would think. If you put your finger in the pit of your stomach and draw a line around back on both sides, that's the normal position of the kidneys. If your pain is in that area, then it could be your kidneys, if it is lower and very likely could be muscular. Either way if it persists or increases in frequency duration severity have it checked out.

Yes : A kidney stone that has entered the ureter can certainly cause pain the way you have described. Drink plenty of fluids and if the pain gets too bad you may have to go to the hospital.
