Depends on the cause: There are many potential causes.The sciatic nerve or one of it's branches can be 'pinched' by a herniated disc, stuck vertebra, or piriformis muscle spasm, or even hamstring spasm. Many other causes such as referred pain from SI ligament injury, too.A good history &amp; physical, incl osteopathic hands-on exam may find/fix it. If nerve is inflamed, neuroprolotherapy may help.

Lipoma?: Most common cause would be a lipoma which is a benign (not cancer) growth of fat in the skin.  If it gets bigger, starts to hurt or changes character, see your doctor.

More likely the discomfort is muscular and could be the result of chronic strain or tight hamstrings. A less likely cause is bilateral phlebitis. Hamstring? sciatica?: Commonly pain in the back of thigh is due to hamstring injury or sciatica. The latter may radiate pain past the knee and into the leg sometimes with numbnes. Sciatica is due to low back issues such as arthritis or disc herniation compressing the sciatic nerve/branches. If symptoms persist or you develop any weakness/paralysis in your lower extremities then seek attention immediately in an er.

Sciatica ?: 23 year old female with unilateral "upper thigh" pain standing, but not sitting, which relatively takes longitudinal mechanical strain off of the sciatic nerve. If this persists see Orthopedist or Physiatrist. There are several potential causes of the pain pattern called "sciatica".

Sciatica: Women can often develop nerve compression of the sciatic nerve during pregnancy from the size of the baby. This could be a delayed reaction presenting now as the symptoms you described. Initially rest and ice is appropriate treatment, but you should see your Family Doctor if symptoms persist or worsen
