Varies: Most total hip patients experience significant pain relief very soon after surgery. It is not uncommon though for a patient to need occasional pain medication for a few weeks after surgery. Individual pain thresholds vary from person to person.

Accepted Answer

Walking: Prolonged or severe hip pain following hip placement is unusual, so be sure to discuss it with your surgeon.  For most people, walking is very effective in reducing the pain and pain killers are rarely necessary after a few days or weeks.  Start with Acetaminophen and avoid nsaids unless your surgeon approves.

Hip abductors: Hip abductor strengthening exercises are ideal.  One exercise is the crab walk.  Tie a theraband in a closed loop, place it around your ankles, bend hips and knees slightly, and walk sideways 10 steps then back again and repeat.  Try 3 sets of this a day.  Another good exercise are clamshells.  Lie with op side up, flex knees and hips, keep ankles together and open and close knees.

Yes: Recovery from hip replacement is short involving assisted walking, falls prevention, and general strengthening.  The leg may hurt and swell for a few weeks after surgery, so pushing it too fast is unwise.  In general, though, mobility returns quickly.

Excellent: When arthritis or other problem leads to deterioration of the hip, pain is interfering with activities of daily living, and conservative care isn't working, then a hip replacement is a good surgical option. It can be done from the front or back and 95% do well. Risks include infection, instability, limb length discrepancy, nerve damage, and blood clots, but these are infrequent (&lt;5%). Most do well.

Don't run: Depending on a number of factors including the surgical approach used, whether the leg was lengthened and differences among patients you can expect to have some limp for several months after hip replacement surgery.  These replacements were not made for the impact of running and i strongly advise my patients to avoid those types of impact activities which will shorten implant life.

Wear and loosening: We check x-rays  to look for wear of the implant bearings over time and loosening of the implants from the bone which is seen as gaps behind the implant and  bone/cement interface. We also look for cysts behind the implants as a sign of significant wear called osteolysis.

6-12 weeks: Most patients will feel fatigue for for 1-3 months after a hip replacement surgery.  This is related to the anesthesia, blood loss,  and rehabilitation after the surgery.  This will gradually disappear as your activity level returns to normal.  It can be affected by age, preoperative activity level, and other health conditions.  Walking, exercise, and good nutrition will help.

Sleeping & sitting: It depends on the timing after surgery.  Also the type of surgical approach that was used.  If you are at least 6 weeks out from surgery you should be able to sit or sleep in any position that you desire.  If you are in the immediate post op period, that is less than 6 weeks, these positions would be determined by the surgical approach.  You should talk with your surgeon to determine the approach.
