Two options: Open surgical excision is the most common treatment. Another option is arthroscopic removal. Aspiration with a syringe is rarely successful and counter indicated for velar wrist ganglions.

Tendon irritation: Ganglion cyst represents the traumatic effect of the wrist tendon pulling thru the tendon sheath.  If most of the fluid is out, the rubbing effect of tendon movement can cause some pain.  Its more effective to  do the aspiration and inject several cc kenalog (triamcinolone).

Not long at all: This is a minor surgery and you may be able to go back to your culinary school within 48 hours most o , but of the time.But ask this question from the surgeon who is doing the surgery as the location of ganglion may require longer rest to your wrist.

i'm assuming what i have is a ganglion cyst on my wrist. the only problem i have is that i can't wear my watch. it's about 1/2 in in diameter. is it necessary to get it removed? will having it cause damage to my nerves or tendons?

Yes: A ganglion does not need to b removed unless it is symptomatic.. If you can not wear a watch then I would suggest removal.  Removal should not cause damage to nerves or motor nerves

No: A cast is only going to get your wrist stiff after the surgery. I place patients is a light dressing for two days which can then be removed. Patients begin range of motion exercises the day after surgery to prevent stiffness.

Varies : Varies somewhat based upon the size of the soft tissue dissection required; but in general we begin progressive range of motion exercises to reduce the likelihood of developing a lot of stiffness postoperatively.  Don't hesitate to discuss with your surgeon.

If small/ painless: No need for sugery if small and painless as by the time they are ready to operate it is even difficult to identify it . But if it is large and symptomatic with pain then needs to be operated.Hand surgeons/general  orthopedic doctors are good for this surgery . Receurrence despite the surgery is one of the common complications of this cyst. Scar usually is small. Post op. Wound infectn/keloid can+.
