Its also called a pap smear. The purpose is to screen for pre-cancer and cancer. Certain infections can also be detected.

A PAP Smear: The cervical smear is a test for changes in the birth canal caused by human papilloma virus.
If the smear is abnormal, these changes may lead to precancer or cancer of the cervix. Precancer can be treated before it turns to cancer. If abnormal, i would suggest you see a gynecologist.

Depends: It depends on the abnormality that was found.  Most all of the pre-cancerous changes that can occur are due to the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which is transmitted sexually.  If the abnormality was inflammation or glandular changes then there may be other causes

Yes: Yes.  A pap smear will not affect a developing baby in the uterus.  The cervical pap smear is done on the "outside" of the cervix (the part facing the vagina).  The baby develops in the uterus, which is on the other side of the cervix.  Be sure to mention to your family doctor or ob/gyn that you suspect you are pregnant; they can help you determine whether you are for sure.

Call your doc: You may need cultures to r/o infection, even with a discharge u can do a thin prep or sure path pap.

Need to examine: You may have a lesion on our cervix which is a usual reason for coital bleeding. It would be prudent to get your PAP, get tested for HPV and ask the doctor to examine you for the coital bleeding.
