Stents keep blood flowing to the muscle, and a pacer/defibrillator keeps the electricity on and timed right. When part of the heart is dead, patients are less active. They also may develop congestive heart failure, with fluid backing up into lungs. Pills can help.

Very few: The indications are for slow heart rate which can be dangerous- even lethal.
There are risks of implantation, but those are past.
Some wire or battery failures over time.
Rare perforation, infection, clots.

Overall very necessary and very safe.

Depends: Much depends upon the status of her heart muscle health as determined by an echocardiogram or gated blood pool scan.. If her left ventricle has good strength (normal ejection fraction)and no evidence of past or present congestive heart failure, I believe survival odds can be good barring any further heart attacks which will cause myocardial damage.

Work: His cardiologist knows him best and he should follow his instructions and advice. As far as risky exposure to chemicals, in this day and age,it would be unlikely. His low left ventricular EF could cause chronic fatigue and shortness of breath with exertion so, hopefully, his job doesn't require strenuous exertion or prolonged standing. Upgrading to a biventricular pacemaker may improve his EF.

That lead to chaos if the patient's inherent heart rate was not always real slow. So they made pacemaker's which sense normal beats and only fire if the rate gets slow. They are inhibited when a heartbeat is sensed.
