Prolactin elevation: Hi. Prolactin (PRL) elevation is usually due to a benign tumor in the pituitary, although some drugs can cause PRL elevation too. Elevated PRL is associated with breast milk production and turning off periods. Generally PRL elevation is treated with a pill that mimics the neurotransmitter, dopamine (drug is called cabergoline; less likely, bromocriptine). Almost all cases can be managed with pill.

Macroprolactin (m-PRL) is an aggregate of PRL, so blood PRL measures high, but m-PRL doesn't cause a problem and doesn't need treatment. That's all!
