During a cycle where pregnancy occurs, fertilization actually occurs during this transit cycle.  The funnel has tiny little fronds on it that wave in the fluid of the pelvis, drawing the egg into its opening, almost like the tentacles of a sea anemone.

Ultrasound scans with contrast can also check for at least one open tube, but it's not as good a test as a hsg.
