Virus &amp;/or allergies: Viral upper respiratory infections can hang around for weeks, but may be compounded by allergies. Sinus infection is another possibility. Best to see a primary care provider at this point for a more complete evaluation. Hope this helps!

Dr. can evaluate: Throat symptoms can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (Tamiflu (oseltamivir) may be used for influenza), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. A person might see a doctor if the sore throat is very painful or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat or influenza), or if associated with ear pain or ear pressure.

Cough with phlegm: May be post nasal drip, reflux, food intolerance(milk,gluten/soy)  irritating sinuses when asleep (  head is low andreflux  like  a tide moves up  to mouth /sinus), may be mycoplasma infection-consider  Z pk(zithromax if not allergic) may get rid of the cough. Can try ranitidine,( reflux)l Zyrtec, and elevating head of bed  at night and see if that helps. F/u with doctor urgent care

Guaifenesin: Use Mucinex or Robitussin (guaifenesin) and a vaporizer to help loosen the phlegm.  Go see a doctor if no better in a few days.

Maybe. Maybe not.: Throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Some throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) can temporarily lessen pain.

Allergies or reflux : Most likely postnasal drop from environmental allergies or reflux in throat. An ENT would be able to diagnose and treat you appropriately.

Viral: This is a viral upper respiratory tract infection which has travelled to the trachea or bronchial tubes. Since over a week has transpired and you have a heavy,productive cough it no longer is a simple viral infection but now it seems bacterial and deserving of a course of antibiotics. I recommend that your physician examine you for diagnosis and treatment advice. Take adequate fluids,cough syrup
