There are multiple causes of optic neuritis, it can affect one or both eyes, and the etiologies are somewhat age related. The patient may be aware of a blind spot in the affected eye.

Steroids: Optic neuritis can be the initial sign of multiple sclerosis, but could be due to many other causes.  Typically, best to use intravenous Methylprednisolone but acth would also work, and oral steroids at high enough doses may reverse the visual loss.  But beware, if an MRI shows multiple lesions, as there is a potential need to confirm ms.

Optic neuritis : treatment of optic neuritis is usually with intravenous steroids for three days which hastens recovery of vision but does not change visual outcome.  Follow up with an ophthalmologist and neurologist are important to assure that the cause of the optic neuritis is properly identified and treatment for the underlying cause (for example multiple sclerosis in some cases) is initiated.

Most likely: If you have a  significant prescription and want to decrease your spectacle dependence, then lasik can be considered.  Optic neuritis due to ms does not disqualify you but any deficits due to prior episodes (such as decreased best corrected vision, visual field defects, decreased contrast sensitivity, color perception abnormalities)  will still be present after surgery.

Steroids: The most common cause of optic neuritis is demyelination, however there are several causes for demyelination. Its is important to determine the cause, lyme's disease, multiple sclerosis, a post infectious demyelination, sarcoidosis, etc. Treatment of the swelling associated with the demyelination is  with IV steroids, but you also need to treat the cause , if there is a specific treatment

No: Though optic neuritis might be the first presentation in someone who will develop ms, there are many times when it is simply optic neuritis.  A thorough history and examination by a neurologist can help address for you whether you might already have ms, or simply optic neuritis.
