No: Optic nerve head drusen do not cause vascular events.  Loss of vision due a vascular event is a serious problem that may be a warning sign for a life-threatening problem.  See an ophthalmologist asap.

Not typical!: Optic nerve he'd drusens are associated with field loss sometimes, but they are chronic and stable.  I am not aware of them being associated with sudden loss.  Look for a different cause!  depending on the that, it may or may not be reversible (most likely not).

Glaucoma prevention: Requires regular follow up , at least once a year, including eye fundus (back of the eye) exam, eye pressure and probably other tests as deemed necessary by the ophthalmologist , wish you wellness

Close observation: Optic disc drusen is not curable and can cause other problems. I like to treat my patients with glaucoma drops to keep the intraocular pressure low, and i like a neuro-protective medication.  That said, there is no studies to support this treatment protocol, of which I am aware.  With your occupation, i would recommend an evaluation by a neuro-ophthalmologist.

: That finding could be the early stage of optic nerve atrophy so its significance will depend on your symptoms and the indication for that eye CT. You should have a thorough discussion with your ophthalmologist +/- neurologist who ordered the test. Good luck.

Depends: Drusen can be of little concern or they can be the first evidence of something like macular degeneration.  You should talk to your ophthalmologist about the type you have and what it means for you.

Long term risk: Macular drusen usually occur in both eyes and shows a strongly inherited pattern.  As time passes and the drusen either enlarge or become confluent, then sometimes the vision is affected.  This would be rare in a 32 year old; the inheritance pattern is well described.  You should have them looked at about every 2-3 years for a while.

Ultrasound: Ultrasound can detect optic nerve drusen. Bring him over to lion's eye.

Accepted Answer

Drusen: Drusen are yellow deposits (acid mucopolysacchride) under the retina. If they are under the macula (the central retina) they are the precursor of aging macular degeneration but it is unusual to see them in patients under 55 unless there is a strong family history of macular degeneration. It would be wise to have her see a retinal specialist to confirm the diagnosis.
