Boil or HSV: Herpes looks a lot like a boil. You should see a doctor and get it tested.  Herpes has small bumps which can sometimes be filled with fluid. They can be red and painful.  You won't get tss if you pop it, but see doctor before popping it so you can get it cultured.  It's important to know so, if positive, you can tell partner and you'll need meds if have vaginal delivery to prevent transmission.

can you squeeze open an infected hair follicle and nothing come out? even if it's a boil or carbuncle?

: It would be unusual to have a skin infection and have no drainage from the skin abscess, which is what a boil or carbuncle is. If there is absolutely no drainage at all, then there is likely an alternative diagnosis. Perhaps you should see a dermatologist if there is a recurrence of the problem. Good luck!

Possible Abscesses: It sounds like you may have some  folliculitis or abscesses with or without cellulitis.  You may need antibiotics and possible drainage of the abscesses if they are fully formed.  In the meantime analgesia like paracetamol and ibuprofen will help but also running hot soapy water as often as it is convenient and should help.  You should let a doctor take a look at it.

Unsure: It would require an exam and possibly cultures at least to be able to determine what is responsible for your lesion.  You need to see your doctor.

Likely: Still has local inflammation vs an underlying cyst.  If it remains tender, red there may be an abscess
