Not: Not contagious. Ventilate, keep nails short. Do not wear sox in bed. Genetic factors. Skin chemistry and immune factors determine susceptability.  The T. Rubrum dermatophyte is ubiquitous. We are all exposed to it. Oral terbinafine, if used correctly, is best chance for cure. Also treat fungus on toes and feet.

Good probability: There is a good chance of the the nail growing back.  If you treat the fungus while it is growing back there is a better chance of growing a healthy nail in place of the diseased one.

Oral Antifungals: Oral antifungals like Lamisil (terbinafine) or itraconazole, Fluconazole or ketoconazole are the best to treat fungus in the nails.  Topical products do not penetrate deeply enough into the nail to kill the fungus, so are generally ineffective.  However, using topical anti fungal medications after the nail fungus is clear is wise so as to minimize the risk of reinfection of the nail.

Oral Antifungals: Onychomycosis (toenail fungus) is most effectively treated using oral anti fungal medication. This is most commonly terbinafine (lamisil), but itraconazole, ketoconazole and Fluconazole can also be used.  Topical antifungals are generally not effective to treat nail fungus as the medicine does not penetrate deeply enough into the nail.

Topical-Oral-Laser: There are 3 tratments that i recommend. Topical antifungal medication that is brushed on the toenail, several times daily. Very low cure rate. Oral antifungal medication such as Lamisil (terbinafine) that you take daily for 3 months. Or laiser treatments to get rid of the fungus. Lamisl and laser treatments have a much higher cure rate. Laser treatments are not usullay covered by insurance and can be expensive.

See a dermatologist: Pill for toenail fungus for 3 months, for fingernail 6 weeks. Expect it to work more than 60 %. Hope to see normal finger in 6 m0nths, toenail in 12 months. Lamasil cost $1200 , but now generic terbinafine costs $10 at wallmart. It is very safe but prudent to do blood tests at 6 weeks.
