if i have poor circulation in one leg, making it colder than the other, would it affect the results of an emg/ncs?

Accepted Answer

Probably Not, But...: Although temperature does play a role in the outcome of an EMG/NCV study, most neurophysiologists check temperature during the test to identify this as a source of error.  To some extent, the answer to this question depends on the results of the test and the skill set of the person doing the test.  I would discuss it with the doctor who performed the test, if possible.  Stay healthy!

Circulation: If one leg is consistently cold and you cannot easily warm it and especially if you have pain in that leg while exercising, then there might be a problem with blood flow which can be quite dangerous.  You should see your family doctor right away especially if you have a history of diabetes or clotting abnormalities.

Need more info: there is not really enough info here to give a good answer. If it is really bothering him, have him see his primary doctor for a more thorough history and exam.

See pain management: specialist. Some continuous neuropathic pains are also maintained by the sympathetic nervous system and are designated as sympathetically maintained pain (SMP). The mechanism of SMP is unclear and several hypotheses have been offered. The most accepted theory that when peripheral nerves are damaged, alpha 1 (and possibly alpha 2) receptors may be up-regulated on afferent (sensory) neurons.

hi - i am 34 and been having random patchy goosebumps appear on my left thigh that come and go. i am not cold when they appear and its local to one spot on my leg. every now and again i will get them on my arm. what is the cause for this?

: Thinking it may be due to cold or warm or stress  Keep a goosebump diary to see if you can track it down. Like food drink stress meds.  Then share with your doctor and the two of you can figure it out.

See a doctor: Tell him about these symptoms. Could be a congenital or new problem with aorta, the big artery that leaves your heart. It could also be something else. You won't know unless it's worked up by a doctor.

Possibly: Cocaine can cause a vasculitis which is a severe inflammation of blood vessels leading to a compromise of circulation and possible tissue damage. Have the legs evaluated as soon as possible.

See doctor soon: There are too many possibilities to consider.  It could be a problem of the back or hip.  Circulation should be evaluated as well.

You are asking a : Question about a region of swelling that has been present now for three years???
Where have you been for the past three years? You need to have a clinical examination to determine if this is a soft tissue growth or if it is something else like scar tissue, Achilles tendonopathy etc....

my dad has polycythemia vera rubra and one of his legs is ice cold and he is having leg pain in both legs.... any idea why that could be happening?

Blood clot: I would really worry about a blood clot. Please have your dad see a doctor or go to the ER immediately.
