i just had an mri done and results came back saying, c3-c4 disc osteophyte complex, uncovertebral hypertrophy, and facet joint arthropathy combine to cause moderate right and mild left neural foraminal narrowing. what does this mean?

: A discussion of these findings should come from the doc who knows the full history, exam and other test results. A simple interpretation of the wording is the size and shape of the bony spine parts result in a narrowing of the opening where the nerves exit from the spinal cord.

Not enough info: Your MRI finding in the cervical, lumbar and thoracic spine sound like typical MRI findings in middle age individuals. Neck and back pain are very common in your age group and can be seen with and without these findings. What you described does not mean you should or should not have pain. Moreover, not knowing where your pain is, it makes it harder to help you.

In short it means th: -at you have degenerative disk disease centered around C-4, and as a result of this you have bulging of the disk that takes up room that the nerves pass through. If you have arrm symptoms, this can be a cause. It would be on the right side.  Spondylosis just a long word for degenerative disease of the spine. Treatment should be done by a spine specialist, fellowship trained orthopedist.

Bone spur: Uncovertebral joint osteophytes, or bone spurs, occur where the vertebral bodies of the third through seventh cervical vertebrae meet. These five stacked neck vertebrae are connected at four cartilage-covered joints – a pair of facet joints located on the articular processes on either side; and a pair of uncovertebral joints formed where small ridges of bone, called the uncinate processes arise.

mri cervical spine showed 2 central disc herniations, a bulge, 2 uncovertebral joint hypertophy into thecal sac. how long until i heal, i am doing pt.

Can take 1- 2 years: MRI's of the cervical spine show the current state of the the spinal elements as they change over time.Several of those changes such as uncovertebral joint hypertrophy are a response to gravity and changes in the disc.The disc herniations will do their best to heal slowly over time, however they are due to aging and degeneration with water loss.In the meantime continue PT and regular f/u w/your MD

What is your symptom: One level problem means nothing by itself. what is your problem? Normally I see this as an incidental  finding. If you have neck pain is probalbly coming from your facet/ uncocvertebral joint and not other thing. If your compression on the theal sac gets worse in future you may need surgery.

See below...: With age we all unfortunately lose water and cartilage in our discs. This can cause the discs to bulge and is commonly seen on mri. Disc bulges and bone spurs from the uncovertebral joints that compress nerves can cause arm pain, weakness, and numbness. I would follow-up with your doctor to determine if your symptoms are related to the changes seen on mri.

Don't panic: 1) The scan is not the pt; you are. 2) Operative word here is "mild." Those findings may cause no symptoms at all. 3) In medicine and especially in this sort of situation, 1 picture = 1000 words. Your doc ordered the scan for a reason. Look at the images with your doc and have them interpret them for you, or find you someone who can. You have a right to an explanation in terms you understand.

Spinal Arthritis: Your MRI results are consistent with age. Often these findings do not cause any pain. A lifetime of use, injuries (sports/falls) are consistent with these findings. Most people have similar "arthritic" changes in the spine after age 25. I assume you are symptomatic. PT, weight control and strengthening your back would good first steps. Listening to your pain is very important to avoid re-injuring.
