Immediate surgical repair is required.

The organs are covered in a thin, nearly transparent sac that hardly ever is open or broken.  It is associated with a high rate of mortality and severe malformations, such as cardiac anomalies and neural tube defect.

Difficult to answer: I cannot tell you.  there are small omphaloceles that are essentially a big umbilical hernia.  However, many have other problems as it forms at the same time as the heart and other structures such as the rectum/anus, bladder, vagina, etc.  If the defect is large, the baby might also have breathing issues.

Surgical: Omphalocele is a herniation of the bowel outside of the abdominal cavity of the fetus. There is a high association with other severe congenital anomalies including cardiac, and neural tube defects in up to 50% of fetuses. Repairing the omphalocele often is done in stages to allow the abdomen to expand & accept the bowel without causing compromise to the lungs.
