i just had a chest x-ray that showed minimal old granulomatous disease.  could this cause shortness of breath with minimal exercise (walking up hill)?

Shouldn't: If the lung involvement is truly "minimal" on CXR or CT scan then this shouldn't compromise your lung function enough to cause respiratory symptoms with minimal exercise. Important to determine etiology of lesions first then look for other causes of shortness of breath. Deconditioning, asthma, heart disease are just a few conditions that can be implicated. Encounter to TB: If there is a sign of remote granulomatous disease in your lung, it means that the radiologist saw some calcification in your xray.
The majority of these cases means that patient at some point was infected with tuberculosis, but her or his body controlled the infection.
There are other granulomatous diseases beside tuberculosis infection such as histoplasmosis which is endemic in some areas of usa.

Benign: Granulomatous disease is usually caused by prior infection by histoplasma fungus. This is benign and quite common. Nothing you describe sounds worrisome.

Mgt: A virtual appointment may be booked to upload the report for review. The findings may be caused by a number of conditions. Among these are infections, TB, malignancy.
A PET scan may be indicated.

Mgt: Both diagnoses are possible If the areas remain stable, I would recommend following and observing for any symptoms. A ppd skin test can help to rule out TB exposure.

Just follow up: Your doctor would explain to you the findings in a better way in the context of your clinical picture, at any rate  hilar calcification can present old granulomatous disorder or often times just exposure to a fungus &quot;blastomyces&quot;  many people in the southern States are exposed and are asymptomatic and the calcifications just appear on the xray, if no symptoms don&#x27;t worry and keep your follow up

Change in activity: Granuloma means a collection of immune cells in an area of body. Usually this happens in a long standing infection such tuberculosis. When the appearance changes in a old tissue, it could mean a reactivation.

Not herpes related: Herpes, genital or otherwise, doesn't cause anything like this. These are entirely unrelated problems. Many past  infections could cause "old granulomatous disease" detected by chest Xray or CT, and most cases like this turn out not to be serious. But don't take the chance -- follow your doctor's advice about further evaluation. But don't worry at all about herpes. Good luck!

Wbcs roam the various tissues  and engulf bacteria and fungi they encounter and then digest them inside themselves. When a crucial molecule, the reactive oxygen species (ros) is not present to enable the killing, the infection is not stopped. So these patients get sick very often.
