Preventive measures: Many rules are in place to prevent limb loss: 60 minutes is the recommended inflation time for arms & 90 minutes for legs. When recommended time limit reached, it's recommended that cuff be deflated for 15 minutes to allow re-perfusion of the arm/leg; then cuff can be reinflated for another recommended time period, eg 60/90 min. Limb should be re-exsanguinated prior to reinflation to prevent clots.

Perhaps...: The most common causes may include:
a) your highest rib may be rubbing against the arm blood vessels
b) you may have an abnormality of your aortic arch which restricts blood flow
c) over exertion can cause swelling within your muscles which in rare causes can restrict normal blood flow.
D) chronic blood clots could also contribute.
If it keeps happening, see your doctor and share these ideas.

Arm pain: Logan any injury to the arm? You say odd blood flow, is this because the color of the arm is different than the left or is it something you feel? If any swelling noted in the arm, if arm color different from left or if the function of the arm is not normal, you should have this checked out. Blood vessel, nerve?: A person who gets numbness, tingling, or odd sensations in a part of his body may be pressing on the nerve to that part of the body. Pressing on the blood vessels to that part of the body is also possible. The person can see his primary care doctor and show him exactly what happens. The doctor may then refer to a neurologist or cardiologist. An ultrasound scan can check the blood flow to the arm.

Starts when sleep?: Does this problem always occur during sleep? Do you sleep with your arm under your head? You may suffer from  arm numbness from  the weight of your head during sleep blocking circulation in the arm that gets better when you wake up and change position. Hope that helps.

Collaterals: Without a procedure such as a bypass or an angioplasty there are only two things that can do this.
One is dissolution of a blood clot restoring normal blood flow and the other is developing collateral circulation around the obstructed artery .
I assume this is not "spasm" which should last no more than minutes

Yes and no: The first part is normal. However  normal sensation should return quickly once the prssure is removed and the blood flow returns.  The lingering numbness could indicate aproblem  with the spine in the area where the nerve  emerges. You should have it evaluated,possibly with an xray.

R S D: The sympathetic nerves control blood flow and sweating and color of the skin.  When the sympathetic nerves are irritated, bouts of pain, discoloration, temperature change and sweat change can occur.  This is referred to as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (rsd).  It is difficult to diagnose and difficult to treat.  A thorough evaluation would be appropriate.
