I : I am a pediatric eating disorder physician and i would like to go on record as saying that obesity is not child abuse.  Frankly we understand so little about the biology of obesity that we are not even sure why anyone gets fat, even when it seems"obvious" that people feed their children poorly.  We appear to get fat for genetic and environmental reasons.
  
Of interest are recent articles reporting that other (non-human) mammals who live in close proximity to humans, such as domesticated animals and laboratory animals, are getting fatter as well, even when their food intake is tightly controlled, implying that there may be non-food environmental triggers to increasing obesity (infectious agents? Hormonally active pollutants? Food or cosmetic additives?)

until the science is better defined, those of us who do not seem to have the genetic propensity to respond to our environment with ever increasing girth might best be served by adopting an attitude of compassion rather than judgmentalism.

what happens if an obese person stops eating?

Accepted Answer

Stop eating: An obese person, like a thin person, would lose weight if they stopped eating. If they did it long enough, they would become malnourished even if they were still obese. That's one thing that most people don't realize. You can be obese and be malnourished at the same time.

can an obese person survive longer without food?

Accepted Answer

Maybe: An obese person will have more fat stores, but also more fat-free mass (muscle, bone) to carry the extra weight.  This may allow them to survive longer without food. As with thin people, they will begin to break down muscle, so this is not a safe way for the obese person to try to lose weight.

Accepted Answer

You: Wouldn't likely have a major change in body type (ectomorph, endomorph, mesomorph) but that doesn't mean that you can't slim down, lose excess weight, improve your health and feel happier about how you look. Take care.

what is safer travel for obese person? train or plane?

Accepted Answer

No difference: The train allows you to spread out more with larger seats and less disturbance of those in adjacent seats.  Airlines except for first class, have narrow seats and frankly, no one wants to sit next to an obese fellow passenger which limits their mobility.  But your extra weight makes no change in the safety of the travel arrangement.

how come people think its bad for an obese person to fast?

Accepted Answer

Fasting: Fasting does nothing beneficial for you. It is not healthy, and certainly does not promote or maintain long term weight loss. When you fast, it slows your metabolism which causes you to gain the weight back (+more) when you stop fasting. This is the yo-yo effect. As a stand alone method for long term weight control, fasting is terrible. Eating healthy and exercising is the best.

which is the best exercise for obese person to start with?

Daily activities: Make your daily activities more difficult - take the stairs, park further away, bike/ walk to work/ store, sit on a swiss ball/ at your desk and stand up every time you answer the phone, or  lunge/ hop/ jump from place to place in your house. Things like these may seem small and silly, but the increased calorie burn can add up over time. Don't forget a healthy diet!

how can a person who is normal weight be at risk for obesity-related diseases?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Family history is important as well. Anyone may have increased risk. It is just that obese individuals have even greater risk.

Accepted Answer

The same: Being obese is not a protection against prolonged fasting. Is just another form of malnutrition.

Accepted Answer

Depends: It depends on how much weight is lost.
