Foot massage: Foot massage is extremely helpful for foot numbness because it increases circulation.  Numbness is due to decreased circulation especially to nerves which alter sensation.  It's not likely a pinched nerve per se but compression of all your foot structures.  A soak and massage should be good....And laying off the high heels may be good too. :-).

after wearing high heels out on the town for an evening, my girlfriends left middle toe has been numb for the last two days, should she be concerned?

Impingement : She may have impinged a nerve near the ball of her foot.  Although she may not have had pain while wearing heels at the time, the wear and tear afterwards can swelling and impingement around the nerve serving her third toe.  Rest, ice, antiinflammatory meds and wear supportive shoes, if numbness continues after 1-2 weeks, tell her to see podiatrist.  Best of luck!  hope this helps!

Neuropraxia.: Fret not. It sounds as though you have caused a common digital nerve supplying the toes to become compromised. It may take  a week or two for full recovery. Give rest a chance and avoid those shoes unless you want to compile your injury.

Could be a neuroma: If just 2 or 3 toes are "numb" this could be from a specific type of nerve irritation called a neuroma. If all the toes are numb, something else may be going on.  See a podiatrist for a physical exam and diagnosis... Then specific treatment is much easier to recommend.

Stop wearing : The heels. Your toes maybe squeezing together and you many have one or two neuromas (nerve compressions.) you can ice the bottom of the forefoot as well and try and wear wider shoes or just ones that don't compress.

Toe exercises: High heels shift the forces to front part of the foot and with prolonged use can lead to foot problems in some including compression of nerves. First thing to do is be sure that the loss of feeling is indeed due to wearing high heels. I recommend you get checked up first, if there is no other cause found, start wearing comfortable shoes and toe exercises.

How long: How long has it been since wearing the shoes?  You may have a neuroma which is an enlargement of the nerve in between the toes.  You should see a podiatrist for treatment.

No: No, I would not be worried.  In all likelihood, your forefoot is probably wider than the shoes you wore that night.  That can cause compression of the nerves between the toes resulting in the numbness you are describing.  If it progresses, it is commonly known as a Morton' s neuroma.  There are other potential causes as well.  If it bothers you don't hesitate to be seen.
