Depends: on type of injury ,repair of damaged nerve , location  of injury when repaired will regenerate at the of  1mm a day ( approximate )  , in some areas may not regenerate and will be permanent , speak to his doctor for exact out come .

Numb lip: Usually a numb lip from lower jaw surgery. You may bite your lip since you can't feel it. Food/liquids may dribble down your chin since you can't feel the food/liquids. Sometimes articulation problems.

Most Likely Will Not: Although very rare, I have seen patients who have had sensation recovery beyond a year.  There are several injuries to a nerve that can occur.  Neuropraxia, axonotmesis, and neurotmesis.   Best to discuss this with your oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

The nerve supplying sensation to these areas was possibly bruised and needs time to heal.  This could take a few days to many months, but you almost always regain normal sensation.  If the extraction was done recently, a course of oral steroids

Numbness: This is usually a transient issue and it can take up to one year for it to return.  There should be progression of return of sensation over time. Check with your doctor and let them know where the numbness is present.

How long ?: How long are you numb for? If it is more than twelve hours post extraction, you need to immediately contact your surgeon for guidance. If this is immediately post op, you will need to let your body metabolize the anesthetic.
