my 8 week old son dropped from 95th percentile in height at birth to 89th percentile at his 8 week visit. his head size stayed about the same. is this cause for concern or is this normal?

: If the percentiles are followed and BMI is normal, his growth is acceptable. Watch for a pattern of poor weight gain, decreases in BMI and two or more percentile growth lines on his growth curve. Discuss any feeding issues with your physician and a virtual consultation with HT is available to review as well.

does weight gain affect head size in newborn? baby boy was born 7lbs & 7 oz. he was 9lbs & 12oz at 1 month. his head circumference grew by 3.5cm from birth to 1 month old! is this worrying?

: It is important that the head circumference was appropriately measured and you may want to put it on the growth chart. The head and body would grow with aging however the proportion of the head to the body would shrink over time. The trend on the growth chart should help you and also discuss with your pediatrician. If the baby is well why worry?

HEAD size: The head circumference falls at the 25th percentile which is normal. It will still become bigger as he grows.

Head size : 49.5cm is larger than normal per chat attached. That does not automatically mean that your child has something terribly wrong. In some families there is a tendency to have large heads without any medical problem. Doctors mostly worry when the head size increases more quickly than expected, as this could mean there is a problem causing rapid increase in the head size.

: This post is confusing as you say there is no hereditary factor to his head size but he is your son with the same sized head! 80% of adult head size is present by age 9 and it matures/grows much slower through the end of puberty. I don't see this as a problem.

No Necessarily: Your height and head size are all genetically determined. Neutrition does play some role. For your height you should weigh weigh close to 160-170 lbs. if you do not have developmental and Learning problems while growing up and if you are already High school graduate , then the small size of head is not a problem; just a normal variant. Eat balanced food . Breakfast Lunch and dinner.

Biopsy: For suspicious changing moles or marks i would recommend a skin biopsy.

nine month old head size 97 percentile, is that bad?

Accepted Answer

Depends: If it has changed from the 10% to the 97% since birth, I would be more concerned than if it was big all along. If his height and weight are on the larger side it would be more consistent with a normal variant. It didn't bother me much in life, except when looking for a helmet that would fit.
