Usually around 98.6 : Hoping your thermometer is accurate you may have a low grade fever. For some people up to 99 f is considered normal. Assuming this is a new sign, if persistent you better be checked for the reason, most common is an infection.

if doctors say that 99-99.4 temp is probably my normal body temp, then how come at times it comes back to 98.6 or evn less? shouldnt body vary less?

Body temp: No temperature reading alone can determine normal from abnormal. Usually more important, is the patient's history and symptoms. A person with a temp of 99.4 and no symtpoms has nothing to worry about, versus the patient with the same temp and additional symptoms. Also keep in mind that temp readings can vary from on thermometer to another and can also vary dependning on the time of day.

98.6 degrees  : The body temperature does vary  normally about a degree in either direction from 98.6.  Less than 100.4 rectal temp is generally considered normal.

No: Doctors prefer to look at signs and symptoms instead of a number from a thermometer.  We don't worry about a temperature in the 98 degree range in a normal person.

Normal body temp: Although a fever technically is any body temperature above the normal of 98.6 degrees f. (37 degrees c.), in practice a person is usually not considered to have a significant fever until the temperature is above 100.4 degrees f (38 degrees c.).

i had a temp of 101 on 2 days ago. since then my temp won't go below 99.5. my normal body temp is 96-97.6 ish. is this a fever still?

Fever: The strict definition is a body temperature which either reaches 100 f or fails to get as low as 98.6 f in a 24 hour period. Strictly, you sound as if you have fever, but not sure what this means because you do not describe any other symptoms. Hope you are better soon.

True: True. There is no single number that represents ideal temp for all people. It depends on where its measured, time of day, activity level, etc. in normal healthy folks your temperature fluctuates over the course of a day.  Lower in morning, higher in afternoon and evening.  99.6 is not a fever

It depends.: Thermoregulation in some children is more labile than in others and a slight fluctuation of 1-2 degrees maybe ok. However, even withim these limits, it is important to understand the reason behind a permanently high body temp. Check with  a pediatrician if concerned

Possibly: Your temperature should naturally elevate according to your environment, surroundings., stress. Where if you go indoors into cooler climate you'd expect the temperature to come back down.

Temp is fine.: Most people don’t have sx’s w West Nile virus. Mild sx’s occur in about 20% of people;  which can include fever, eye pain, generalized body aches, headaches, feeling really tired, &amp; possible enlarged lymph nodes or rash. About 1% have severe illness which can include neurologic problems. Possible sx’s include: seizures, severe headache w stiffness of the neck, high fever, confusion &amp; weakness.
