: Small amounts of free fluid are occasionally seen on an abdominal ultrasound &amp; is not considered a problem. Failure to find the ovaries is just an indication that the study did not take time to locate them and cannot thus comment on their appearance. All such tests need to be interpreted based on your history/exam and the reason the study was done by the physician who requested it.

An ovarian cyst : For very specific details about your specific ultrasound report you will need to ask the doctor who did the sonogram. Otherwise we would simply be guessing.

It is normal: For premenopausal females to have a small amount of simple, free fluid in the pelvis/adnexal area.  Free means that is it free floating and not contained in any structure such as an abscess.

Depends: Some small amounts of fluid in the female pelvis is physiologic. Larger amounts can be associated with ruptured ovarian cyst. Pelvic inflammatory disease can produce pelvic fluid.
In the case of acute appendicitis free fluid can occur as well. Inflammatory bowel disease is another cause of fluid production.

Likely: a functional cyst/follicle which has recently ruptured, these are invariably benign. They might recommend a follow up US just to document complete resolution.

Not necessarily: Some free fluid can be normal.  It can also be from a ruptured ovarian cyst.  Also ascites is free fluid from various diseases.  But a little fluid usually not bad.  Your doctor will help determine the cause.

He wants to be sure: that there were not any retained placenta parts that were missed. Ask him what the risks and benefits of proceeding now, vs watching and waiting. He knows your history the best.

Retained: With an 8mm endometrial stripe and post D&amp;C, i doubt any retained products or placenta. Pay attention to your bleeding though and if any changes notify your physician. Fluid in the endometrial cavity is common after a postpartum D&amp;C. Hope this helps.
