i have a wbc of 11.7 and a neutrophils (absolute) count of 7.9.  both are just outisde "high" range.  should i have this checked closer?

Depends: If you have no symptoms pointing to infection, and the morphology is normal, and your physician hasn't expressed concern, don't worry. The "range" is set to include 90% or so of apparently healthy people. A cold shower will shoot neutrophils well above normal range. "treat the person, not the lab value." thanks for asking.

what does it mean to have a high monocytes and low neutrophils absolute count while i am taking nexavar, (sorafenib) a chemotherapy for advanced thyroid cancer?

Effect of chemo: Low neutrophils are expected with chemotherapy agents, as the drugs destroy them (in the process of destroying the cancerous cells.)  High monocyte count can be due to an infection or inflammation.  Also, as the blood counts recover after a dose of chemo, the monocyte count can also be temporarily improved.  Good luck with your cancer treatment.

my daughter just got blood work done after recently taking amoxicillin for a uti. she stopped taking it a week ago after taking it for about 8/9 days. will this effect the test, specifically the wbc or neutrophils absolute count?

: I guess the answer is dependent on whether her WBC count was initially elevated due to the UTI. It sounds like the longer course of amoxicillin wasn't treating a simple cystitis though, since 3-5 days is usually enough for that. If the bacteria was susceptible to amoxicillin, the WBC was due to the infection, and she feels better after stopping, then one could assume the WBCs have improved

See below: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, your neutrophil count is a little above normal, however, that by itself is not a cause for concern.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.

Not enough info: A blood count is only meaningful in the context of what is happening in the way of symptoms and signs of medical problems.  It can be affected by medicines, infections (both vial and bacterial) and a host of other issues. It is not too bad!: A high white count is commonly due to infection. Infections can be anywhere in the body but common sites are in the urinary tract(bladder or kidney) in women. And upper airways in anyone(pneumonia for example). If you feel well and do not have any fever then we would need to be more concerned. I would have you repeat it and let us know the WBC count and % of neutrophils(diffferential count).
