ANS system: I think you are referring to spinal cord stimulation. Basically its the placement of fine wires with metal contacts into the spine. This is connected to a generator that provides a fine current. The idea is to produce a tingling feeling in an area of pain in order to reduce or control the pain severity. There are 3 companies and the devices work differently.

Nerve damage: This question is very general and a complicated topic for discussion. To simplify the answer I would say it depends on which nerve cell is damaged, Peripheral or central. Central cells are located in our brain and spinal cord and base on the location of them their function is different and therefore their damage manifests differently and this is true for the peripheral one,too.
