Side effects to nerv: These apply to a nerve block anywhere. Nerve injury, bleeding, infection, increased pain, reaction to medication used, numbness, allergic reaction to dye.

Med. Side Effects: Complication following the nerve block occurred on seven occasions with patients reporting headache, muscle ache, fecal incontinence, urinary incontinence, and numbness of the legs. All lasted less than 24 hours.

Sodium Molecules: Are prevented from flowing across nerve cell (neuron) membranes,  stopping pain and nerve impulses from reaching the brain. Neuro-chemical release, however, is not affected! side effects, other than temporary loss of sensation, temperature awareness and movement are minimal. And, in the hands of experienced anesthesiologists, nerve injury exceedingly rare.

Why ask here?: It's SOP before a procedure to have the patient read, discuss &amp; sign a consent form that should describe the procedure &amp; will (or should) specifically list all the possible complications of the procedure. A good practitioner will (or should) also provide you with printed aftercare instructions. If these are not happening, you have a legitimate concern. Ask.

Maybe this is just : Not the source or only source of your symptoms.  Facet joint pain at this side and level is typically localized pain that may refer to buttock & groin worse with back extension &with prolonged sitting & standing .  Facet joint issues account for about 20% of primary cause of back pain so see a spine surgeon to make sure this is your problem & to see if other treatment may be in order.

May not be source of: Very common to have abnormalities in one area of back on MRI and have source of pain be in a different structure, facet blocks are usually test blocks, if relief is significant for a period of 6-8 hours after block, then i would consider a radiofrequency ablation of the nerve to that joint, if no relief than evaluation for a different structure as source of pain is warranted.

Yes: Quite uncommon like infection, nerve damage, spinal headaches and failure to achieve goals.

Accepted Answer

Depends on the: Clinical picture. The numbing itself can be therapeutic even if its for a short while because it prevents or reduces a process called wind-up in the spinal cord that can lead to chronic pain. If the block is used for a chronic condition it is often mostly diagnostic.

i have been seeing a rhuemotologist, i got nerve block injections a while ago which made my spine worse, she wants me to again instead of surgery?

Too Vague: Unfortunately it is difficult to advise you of anything given what you've shared.  I'd suggest discussing your options and your concerns about proceeding with surgery.  There are a lot of treatment options but they all depend on your particular situation.
