Time and technique: Who did the test? When was it done? If you tested too early, it could have been negative even though you had conceived. If the test was not done correctly the negative result would have been unreliable.

That said,  a negative test after a positive one suggests fetal loss, which does occur sometimes in the earliest stages of pregnancy. You can also test later to see if the negative turns positive, or do a more accurate blood test,

Tests are accurate: In a woman with regular periods, some causes of a late period include:  excessive weight loss or weight gain, increased exercising, emotional stress, having an illness, traveling, medicines (like birth control pills), hormonal imbalances, etc…  Seeing a doctor is a good idea if symptoms are persistent, recurring, or worrisome. Home pregnancy tests are very accurate by three (3) weeks after sex.

Unlikely, but...: Of course it is possible to get pregnant after having sex. That is why a woman who has sex must be ready for an unintended pregnancy. However, it is very unlikely to happen, if having "protected sex" correctly, or having with "no ejaculation". If worried, a home pregnancy test gives a reliable result 3 weeks after sex, or 1 week after missing a period. In this case, that means wait another 5 days.

Not likely: Home pregnancy tests are very reliable, so as long as you were reading it correctly, it is unlikely you are pregnant. There are other causes for irregular periods, such as pcos (polycystic ovarian syndrome). You might consider visiting your doctor, who can verify you aren't pregnant, and see what else could be going on.
