Ask pulmonologist: A lung mass is always of concern. Sometimes it can be determined to be benign simply by comparing xrays or CT scans over time. Often it must be biopsied. If possible, this is done through a scope passed down the windpipe. Sometimes that won't reach and biopsy must be done through the chest wall, guided by CT scan. In special cases biopsy is done with a scope through the chest wall or surgically.

However, those that have a mass in their lungs, can develop an infection on top of that so it can definitely appear that way. It is always best to have a repeat chest x ray after you have been treated for pneumonia to make sure there is no underlying mass.

Bronchitis: If you have lingering cough productive of  discolored sputum, fever, wheezing, shortness of breath or chest pains on deep breathing, further evaluation and possible chest X-Ray as well as continued treatment would be needed.

I'm assuming he/she will if it is a "mass" and not a "tiny nodule" but not much more can be said with the info provided. Make sure you see your family doc and he/she will decide on the next step.  If you smoke, this is the time to quit.

Possibilities: I would really need to see the x-ray &amp; more information to begin the process. Some forms of pneumonia can look like a mas. The thymus, a normal part of the immune system can appear on as a mas. Cystic changes in the lungs, enlarged lymph nodes or other abnormal growths (cancer) would be other possibilities.
