i can hardly turn my head. when i do, i feel what i describe as a sharp vein pain on the right side of my neck, under the ear area. it hurts really bad and is mostly constant?

Accepted Answer

: This may be as simple as a pulled muscle, which can be quite painful, or sleeping on it wrong causing a muscle strain. If it is not improving with heat to the area and over the counter pain medication such as ibuprofen (if you have no medical contraindications to that), then I recommend you be examined by your doctor, or an urgent care or ER. If it worsens, you should do that sooner than later.

can it be normal for a neck vein on the left side to recently become more prominent/bulge when laying down/stretching? 36 years old, female, walk many hours each day, no pain, swelling or fatigue, no coughing, no history of illness, normal bp/weight?

: It is normal to have veins in the neck and other places bulge with position, hydration status, and with the Valsalva maneuver.  Best regards.

: HIV is not a likely cause of any of these symptoms. But if you're at risk, of course get tested anyway; and see a doctor if your symptoms continue and/or concern you. Good luck.

lying flat should neck veins normally be flat or destended?

It depends : There are multiple factors that go into neck veins pressure.Your position whether you are lying flat , the position of the bed you are lying on whether it is flat, whether you are relaxed , if you  bear down or valsalva that will distend your neck veins. Other medical factors influence this as well, but yes your vein should be flat if all of the other things are optimized to keep them flat.

i've noticed the past two months that when i lie down two of my neck veins get bigger though it only happens when i'm lying down is there an explanation for this? i'm 28 eat healthy and haven't exercised a ton in the past 3 years?

: The blood volume in your body's veins usually pools some in your legs. When you lay down, the gravity effect is reduced, and the venous blood can settle in more of your upper body. By itself what you are describing is normal.

Normal: Neck veins distend when we lie with our head lower than our heart or when we strain.  With straining, the pressure within the chest increases and the blood flow through the neck veins decrease resulting in them enlarging.  This is normal. Levels  of hydration, genetics, outside temperature and any increase in pressure within the chest will enlarge the neck veins.  Your veins seem to be normal.L.

Normal: Neck veins distend when we lie with our head lower than our heart or when we strain.  With straining, the pressure within the chest increases and the blood flow through the neck veins decrease resulting in them enlarging.When straining is stopped, the pressure in the chest decreases and flow continues through the neck veins so they become less engorged.
