Absolutely: Good to have a thorough evaluation of the discomfort first -- you can start with your primary care doctor.  But then, massage therapy, gentle heat, and gentle osteopathic manipulation are useful. Guided imagery can help.  You need to explore stressful situations in your life, and with help, address them. Responses to stress can fuel muscle tension and make things worse. Acupuncture too, maybe.

Facet Disease: With aging, the intervertebral discs begin to loose hydration (water).  As the shrink, you loose height and the facet joints become painful.  To get this evaluated, i recommend seeing a well trained pain specialist who performs spinal procedures.  Good luck.

Muscle pain: Many times neck and muscle pain is due to weakness and inhibition of the lower terapezius muscles causing excessive tightening of the upper trapezius muscle and of the neck muscles. Scapular stabilization retraining exercises are very helpfu.  Avoid the drugs especially muscle relaxants as they are only sedatives for the most part and don't address the cause of the problem.

Exercise, ice, heat: Gentle range of motion, stretching and walking or any low-impact cardiovascular exercise. Pain can be relieved  with over-the-counter medications like advil or aleve (naproxen). Ice for about 45 minutes will address inflammation and swelling, never apply ice to the skin, always over a towel or clothing. Follow this by heat for about 20 to 25 minutes to help soothe and relax tight muscles. See doc if persists.

Evaluation: If your pain is persistent, it is unlikely to go away without some type of intervention.  A pain specialist can both diagnose and treat the problem with a simple procedure that does not require more than a single day of recovery.

No: There is no known correlation between neck pain and vascular problems with the exception of vertebral artery compression in patients with disc problems or spondylosis.

Evaluate Neck: If you are not improving have your doctor order a cervical spine mri.  Many times a herniated disc in the neck can cause arm pain especially if you have not improved with the medications and physical therapy.  If it is a herniated disc you may need evaluation from a spine specialist to determine what other options might be needed (injections, surgery, etc) to help reduce pain.

Stress: Assuming that there is no damage to your cervical spine, stress is a common cause of neck pain, sitting at a computer all day doesn't help either. May want to get cervical spine checked, then try stress reduction or acupressure. Don't recommend muscle relaxants

Medical evaluation: See a well trained physician who specializes in spinal disorders.  If the problem is minor, you may get relief from simple chiropractic adjustments.  If not, other appropriate treatments will be recommended.
