: This is such an unnatural thing to do  that I see only potential harm from doing it. Strained neck muscles and/or ligaments would be a concern.

left side neck always crack with any movement i make, neck and shoulder blade always very stiff, why?

Accepted Answer

Benign: I am frequently asked about neck/spinal cracking and invariably it is a benign condition, similar to cracking knuckles.  In other words, don't worry about it, especially if you've had an MRI showing that your neck is ok (i'm assuming that based on the MRI listed in your procedures).  Your best best is persistent physical therapy, being active, eating a healthy diet, quitting smoking if applicable.

Sounds positive: I think you are well on the road to recovery.  You might be able to speed the process by learning the mckenzie neck exercise protocol.  Most physical therapists are familiar.

Ligaments: More than likely these sounds are ligamental snapping and most likely are insignificant unless accompanied by discomfort or sharp pains. If you are otherwise fine,there is no need to consult an orthopedic surgeon or chiropractor.

Pinched nerve, slipp: You need an evaluation to be given a diagnosis. This could be slippage or a tumor, or a fracture, or a disc, 
Sicne this type of pain persists  you should be evaluated. It  may not  be more than a pulled muscle  but I can't tell and feel you need  evaluation

To ER if still hurts: Please have someone drive you to the er or go by ambulance. I think this warrants a ct scan to rule out a subdural hematoma.

Kyphosis: Neck and back popping is caused by the facet joints that connect the vertebral body segments when they rub against each other. The noise is very similar to the sound made by cracking knuckles in the hands.This is a common condition associated with arthritis of the spine.

is neck cracking by a chiropractor relatively safe or dangerous?  i've seen doctors on both sides, and i can't decide if i'm taking an unnecessary risk even though it may be helping me feel better.

Accepted Answer

Neck manipulation: High velocity manipulation can come with risks.  I incurred an injury with high  velocity manipulation. However neck manipulation can be quite helpful for misalignment.  It is important that one's neck be evaluated to ensure that risk  doesn't outweigh potential benefit.

See a specialist.: See a non-surgical sports medicine specialist, who would begin with xrays, to determine if your symptoms are coming from any arthritis in the cervical spine, or, it could be musculotendinous in nature, and you might just need some physical therapy.
