Non doctor treatment: Naturopaths are individuals who provide treatment based upon a curriculum which essentially says the body will heal itself with proper diet, exercise and the administration of 'natural' herbs.  Few of their ideas have ever had clinical trials and their stock in trade is to debunk allopathic medicine.  They wear white coats and call themselves 'doc'.  Let the buyer beware.

Not real medicine: Naturopathic medicine is one of the non-scientific "medical" practices. The naturopath "doctors", like other traditional folk medicine "doctors", try to make a person feel better with talking, massage or manipulation, herbs, etc...  It's unproven, but if it seems to help, looks harmless, and is inexpensive, then it may be ok to try. Finding a "doc", checking credentials, etc..., may be difficult.

Yes: More and more western doctors are collaborating with other health professions including chinese medical doctors.  Ask your chinese practitioner if they have any recommendations on western doctors that are open or ask your western doctor if they are willing to collaborate.  You can try looking into academic medical centers that have integrative medicine or find a holistic or integrative M.D.

Varies: Always see an M.D. Or an osteopath first if you suspect a problem.  There is some data suggesting improvements from acupuncturists.  Chiropractors and naturopaths have no scientific basis for their treatments and theories and in fact reject most science.  They should be avoided for all but the most trivial conditions.

They attempt to address the underlying cause of illness rather than just treat symptoms. Yes, it is: Holistic medicine is a legitimate field.  Its body of expertise includes whole-person health, nutrition, mind-body interventions, tcm/acupuncture, herbs, energy medicine, homeopathy, manual medicine, spirituality, and more. Yes they differ: Allopaths are MDs who use conventional treatments such as drugs and surgery.  Osteopaths are DOs who use the above but are trained in manipulation of the body and are a bit slower to use drugs.  Naturopaths us natural approaches such as supplementation, nutrition, etc.  Chiropractors adjust the musculoskeletal system to facilitate the flow of impulses through the nervous system. Depends: Not all acupuncturist and nds are equally effective, and the same can be said about all disciplines.  Just as some mds have a great bedside manner, while some have contempt for patients who ask questions, or who question their answers.

Use both: In some cases there is nothing better than a pharmaceutical medicine and it produces miraculous results that would not be possible with herbal medicine. I think the best approach is the integrative medicine approach and use the best of both.

are chinese herbs effective for treating parkinson's disease?

Accepted Answer

In some cases: Dopamine is the necessary element in parkinson patients. Unfortunately our digestive tract metabolize it, that is why most herbs containind Dopamine don't actually work well.
