Kidney: First you need to take a SMA 7, a blood test that will give a baseline image of your kidney function.  If normal, follow a regular diet, your body will control your normal potassium excretion, unless you have other medical issues like high blood pressure, diabetes or auto immune issues.

Listen to your body: Individuals with chronic kidney disease need to have restricted intake of sodium, potassium, protein, and phosphorus because their kidney can not excrete efficiently.  If  a person with healthy kidneys eats this diet but has a greater need for any of these nutrients  he may notice some imbalance. For instance a person with low blood pressure may feel better with more added salt.

The protein in your urine with a normal creatinine could indicate you are in the early stages of renal disease and it is likely treatable at this stage. You ICU team of doctors is the most appropriate group to ask this question, specifically the id specialist (if there is one in your institution).

: At your age, eGFR should be 90 or higher; however, a result of 88 should be fine as long as your BSA is 1.72 m2 or higher. For a thorough evaluation, a person with eGFR of 90 +/- 5 cc/min should have normal urinalysis and kidney imaging test in order to rule out chronic kidney disease stage 1 which is defined of GFR above 90 cc/min with abnormal urinalysis and/or kidney imaging test(s). BP treatment: The treatment of essential hypertension is, reduction of weight, salt intake, stopping smoking, decrease of alcohol consumption and increased exercise, to start. In some patients, this may not be enough. Not all patients can avoid taking drugs for hbp and as they age, the number of drugs may increase. Taking BP meds is worth the risk. If you take them and control your bp, you avoid complications.

Probably else: When your kidneys fail they stop making urine and you retain urine and gain wt. you present with unintentional rapid wt loss. That has to be worked up pronto. See a good internist right away. Oy Vay!!!
